Types of Racing Tires and Driving Conditions

Racing tires are manufactured to provide superior traction in any type of terrain. The majority of high performance street and track cars are fitted with high performance tires to enable them to race smoothly. As there are different types of racing tires, it is important to know the difference between the various types of tires for your car before you go out and purchase one. A racing tire is usually a flexible type of tire which has a very good tread designed mainly for high speed driving on moist or wet conditions. The original " slicer" tire was developed by M&H Tires for use on drag racing tracks. Today these tires are still used on many types of racing vehicles, but some of the manufacturers have begun to produce dry racing tires. The development of dry racing tires has led to a parallel increase in the development of more aggressive and faster automobiles. Dry racing tires have an extremely deep tread design and are capable of providing quick, precise steering response for faster cornering.

The main advantage of these tires is increased traction. As the tread is very deep and provides excellent grip, the vehicle has increased traction on just about any terrain. With increased traction comes added steering control for better cornering and braking. The additional grip also helps in the re-centering process when the car is going into a turn.

Most racing tires come in two basic styles, as wet and dry. Wet traction tires feature a built-in hydro-formed grip layer, comprised of rubber compounds located on the tread itself. These compounds help to create more traction under ideal driving conditions; however, they can wear down quickly. When the rubber starts to wear, it no longer can provide the increased grip that the manufacturer originally thought was necessary.

Dry weather racing tires feature a solid rubber compound with no hydro-formed additives. In dry weather conditions, the rubber provides a high amount of traction with no signs of wear. The rubber is composed of a high amount of interlocking bricks that can lock together when heated. This feature provides a superior grip even under extreme temperatures. Dry weather traction is best used on light sand and light trails.

The treads on auto racing and motorcycle racing tires vary according to type. There are a wide variety of different designs available. Many top names such as Michelin, Pirelli, Bosch and others have developed special tire designs for particular racers, factors or tracks. Some racers prefer to use special tires due to the fact that racing is not done on soft or muddy tracks. The tires have been designed to be able to grip surfaces with sufficient force for good traction and excellent steering control.

Street racing tires were developed for high speeds on smooth concrete or asphalt surfaces. They are primarily designed to provide strong traction in very clean and safe surroundings. They are ideal for city streets with low speed limit. Many drivers prefer to use street car tires in dry climates since they are less prone to being damaged by changing weather.

Drag tires are another type of racing tire that is often used by NASCAR drivers. Drag tires are designed to corner well on either smooth or irregular surfaces. The tread design features a combination of grooves and channels for improved traction on the road as well as improved handling. There is usually a center channel on most drag tires, although there can be side-cut channels as well.
